Heirloom

Helmed by drummer Hannah Johnson and guitarist Ben Dameron, Heirloom is rounded out by award-winning saxophonist Sam Taylor and bassist Tim Ipsen.

The band’s chief composer, Ben Dameron, writes fluently on subjects both personal and profound. A Seattle native, his two degrees in classical guitar eventually led him to Milwaukee, where he and Johnson connected over a mutual love for modern jazz. His compositional style draws inspiration from the majesty of mountain-clad horizons and the hum of urban life. Johnson brings a virtuosic yet sensitive touch to the drums, shaped by her masterful sense of climax and bloom. A Milwaukee native, she has performed with many jazz masters, including Russ Johnson, Geof Bradfield, Paul Dietrich, Dayna Stephens, Rob Clearfield, and Sharel Cassity.

DownBeat Award-winning saxophonist Sam Taylor carries the melodies with graceful phrasing and a rich tone, elevating the music with striking precision. A Florida native, Taylor is climbing the ranks of Chicago’s vibrant jazz scene after a stretch in New Orleans. Holding down the low end, Midwest heavyweight Tim Ipsen offers tight interplay while maintaining a distinct musical voice. He has worked with acclaimed jazz artists such as Jon Faddis, Cedar Walton, Curtis Fuller, and Marquis Hill.

Heirloom has been featured at festivals across the Midwest, notably opening for Orrin Evans at the 2024 Madison Jazz Festival, as well as performing at Hey Nonny’s Women in Jazz Festival, Bayview Jazz Fest, Riverwest Jazz Fest, and others.
